Even though it seemed like winter in Wisconsin would never leave… even still as I write this, there is a perk to this odd spring. We have had more hummingbirds than ever at our house this spring!
I attribute this to all of the flowering trees and shrubs growing throughout our yard and landscape. The blooms this spring are especially monstrous.
Throughout previous summers I’ve seen three hummingbirds hanging around our place. I hope to keep the half dozen we’ve seen this spring throughout this summer.
To attract them I am putting up a feeder, in addition to all of my plants that attract them. This year I specifically purchased a fuchsia basket to hang on our front porch.
My grandma feeds the orioles and hummingbirds all summer long, which is where I first learned to feed them. The mix is quite simple and easy, it’s just remembering to keep the feeder filled that’s the hard part.
Recipe:
4 parts water to 1 part white table sugar
Boil water then add sugar and dissolve completely. This can be stored in the fridge.
** don’t add red dye
Have you seen hummingbirds this spring? I am keeping my eyes pealed for a nest!
