As we are prepping for the upcoming year as a family my husband and I have discussed what we’d like to do as a family vacation for this summer. Of course we want to hit the beach while staying somewhere family friendly. But with that comes water safety. Even when not on vacation we spend a decent amount of time on the water and I wanted my toddler to have an awareness of water. This is where my hunt for life saving lessons came into play. I don’t want to have to avoid the water because my toddler doesn’t respect it.
I came across Infant Swim Resource and luckily enough someone I went to high school with teaches the classes in the Chippewa Valley. Because of our history I trusted that she’d keep my little guy safe in the water.
The first round of lessons was in the spring of 2021 where he learned to back float. Even though these aren’t your typical “swim lesson” where it’s about practicing a specific type of stroke, they are about teaching drowning prevention. The second round which was as refresher lesson was in the fall of 2021. It’s amazing the skills little kids can pick up on with repetition. He not only knows the back float but a swim-float-swim pattern for short distances.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for infants and young children between the ages of 1-4.
I don’t share that statistic to scare anyone. I share it because it’s alarming and want others to be aware these types of lessons are available for those interested. Speaking from experience, it’s not worth losing sleep every night while at your summer retreat on the lake because you’re worried about something bad happening while on the water.

These are the best swim shorts that are approved for not potty trained littles for ISR lessons.
I love these waterproof reusable bags for after lessons for the shorts.
